Data recovery from CCTV DVR recorder
Many times, the evidence we need is found in a recording system.
In the event of a theft or robbery, the perpetrators usually do not leave any evidence, so they try to destroy the recording system containing their actions. We have successfully taken on several cases where the perpetrators sufficiently desecrated the camera recorder, and we recovered the data and videos for the evidence our clients needed.
So, our DVR system may have been damaged, broken, or non-functional.
We often encounter problems with damaged disks in a recorder or issues with the recorder itself, which result in the disk being functional but unable to find a compatible DVR to read the encrypted video it contains.
At TicTac, we can help you find the evidence you are looking for in the videos contained within the recording systems. We have successfully recovered many damaged videos from DVRs.
The hard drive of the recorder (DVR) falls under the scope of TicTac’s expertise.
What difficulties are there in recovering data from a DVR / Recorder?
Camera recorders (DVRs) have a special way in which they work.
- First, they usually have an operating system not recognized by standard operating systems (Windows/Mac/Linux), and one cannot read the files when connecting the recorder’s disk.
- Also, their system is often locked or encrypted, and we cannot access the files even if the file structure is recognized.
- The format of the recorder files and their encoding is often not recognized by the Video Players / Media Players on the market.
- However, the main difficulty with recovering data from DVRs is that data recovery programs cannot recover deleted videos.
Some peculiarities make recovering files from a recorder a particularly difficult and specialized task.
Also, the way a recorder works is as follows:
Let’s take, for example, a recorder that records on 4 channels (i.e., from 4 cameras).
In the example, let’s assume that the recorder needs 100GB of data to record from the 4 cameras, 24 hours a day.
Also, let’s assume for convenience that our disk is 1000 GB.
Therefore, the logger will be able to record for 10 consecutive days.
On the 11th day, the recorder will rewrite and delete the space of the 1st day.
On the 12th day, it will delete the 2nd day and write the new files.
How to recover video from a recorder?
At TicTac, we have recovered many DVR recorder cases and have been monitoring their development for several years.
While one might assume that it’s not possible to recover video from several days ago (for example, footage from day 1 when 20 days have passed), we’ve found that although the full video cannot be retrieved, we were still able to recover parts of it.
Because each video is written in blocks of disk, recording each video reserves a portion of, for example, 2.5GB per DVR channel on the disk.
So, when a new video is recorded on the 11th day from channel 1, for example, it does not cover the entire 2.5GB block and leaves behind pieces of the old video.
On these pieces, the TicTac Data Recovery engineers can locate older data.
This technique has led us to find evidence, video clips, or images of criminal acts that occurred long ago, and recovery programs could not restore the data.
DVR brands from which we have recovered video
When video recorders break, we have to deal with a very serious problem: the inhomogeneity of the Filesystem they use and the Format they use to store the videos from the cameras.
At our company, we have successfully recovered the following brands of camera recorders:
- SONY
- AVTECH
- DAHUA
- HIKVISION
- Q-SEE
- LAWREX
- SWANN
- DEFENDER
- UNIDEN
- Z-MODE
- LOGITECH
- SAMSUNG
Our engineers undertake recoveries that require specialized expertise, serving various data recovery needs. In addition to recovering video from DVRs and other databases, we support other cases, such as recovering data from servers, ensuring the restoration of your valuable recorded material.

I lost my files. What should I do?
The most important thing in recovering data from any device is the expertise and method used by the technician or technical company.
It is common for owners of problematic storage media to try to fix the issue themselves or turn to inexperienced people, resulting in even more damage and reducing the chances of data recovery.
Therefore, when critical files are lost, choosing who will intervene carefully in your media is extremely important.
